How to Search for a Job in Singapore as Foreign Talent

Singapore is the ultimate talent hub, for while it is small in size, over the years, it has successfully emerged as one of the world's most affluent and prosperous nations.

It calls to professionals from all around the world—everyone wants to look for job opportunities in Singapore, and to advance their career there. With that though, comes the competitive job market, especially for those who aren't local.

Although in general, finding work as a foreigner can be challenging, expect it in twofold if the country you're looking at is Singapore. Aside from having to fill out stacks of paperwork, adapting to a new professional culture, and managing your visa and lifestyle, there's so much more that comes to moving and working in Singapore that you'll need to learn before you actually get around to it.

So, let us simplify that for you today. Here, we'll tell you how you, as a foreign talent, can look for jobs in Singapore.

  1. Learn and understand the work culture in Singapore

Before you even decide if you'd like to work in Singapore, you should first know what you're getting into. Familiarise yourself with local employment practices—check to see if they're a fit for you and your lifestyle. Take a look at the working hours, holidays, and the culture as a whole, all of which you can find here, where the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) themselves has taken the liberty to consolidate the information just for you.

In Singapore, the culture is crafted from a combination of Western and Asian influences. Singapore's working culture is one that is strict on rules, follows the hierarchy, has professional dress codes, practices collectivism through teamwork more than individualism, and employees are called to work approximately eight to nine hours a day.

Do you think this would work for you? If you do, carry on!

  1. Research into high demand industries and roles

Carry out your own research and look into industries with high demands, because your chances are much more likely if you're looking for a position or to secure employment there. Browse through all of the job portals and websites and find information on the types of positions and roles available, and the type of skills that companies are looking for in candidates.

Of course, with that said, make sure to focus your search based on your skills and academic qualifications as well. If you can't find any, expand your search to industries that would call for the same set of skills and certifications.

To make it easier for you, we've found the most sought after industries in Singapore that you can consider.

  • The finance industry, which covers a variety of careers, ranging from banking, and accounting, to financial planning and insurance.
  • The information technology (IT) industry, which goes without saying, is a high demand sector almost everywhere, as technology continues to advance. In this, the jobs available usually include programming, cybersecurity, and coding among others.
  • The marketing industry, which is always popular and high in demand as social media and the internet become bigger with each passing day.
  • The data analysis industry, which comes hand-in-hand with the others in importance as more businesses are in need of those who can collect, analyse, and present data effectively with a variety of software tools.

There are other industries that you can look into, but these are to name a few of the most popular and in demand sectors that you should definitely consider.

First and foremost, you can check your eligibility easily through this Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) that the MOM has designed specifically for foreigners such as yourself, who are looking into working in Singapore. You can find all of the different types of work passes on MOM's official website, and you can easily browse through as they do categorise them into visas for skilled professionals, skilled and semi-skilled workers, and trainees and students separately.
